The FBI Warns That Your Smart TV Might Be Spying On You!

If you bought a smart TV during Black Friday or Cyber Monday because you couldn't pass up that amazing sale, the FBI is warning consumers that your Smart TV could actually be spying on you. Smart TV's come with internet connection so you can go online and watch movies and tv shows from your favorite streaming services. Your remote also allows you to use voice commands to flip through channels or turn up the volume. In order to do this, your device has cameras and microphones and some have facial recognition technology. While this seems to come in handy when we need it, according to the FBI, the issue is that these devices are often poorly secured by their manufacturers compared to computers or smartphones. If it's poorly secured, cybercriminals can easily access home routers. The warning reads:

"Beyond the risk that your TV manufacturer and app developers may be listening and watching you, that television can also be a gateway for hackers to come into your home. At the low end of the risk spectrum, they can change channels, play with the volume, and show your kids inappropriate videos. In a worst-case scenario, they can turn on your bedroom TV's camera and microphone and silently cyberstalk you."

The FBI advises consumers to understand the features on their Smart TVs and know how to disable them if they need to. They also recommend changing passwords or taping over the camera when you're not using your Smart TV.
